Why I have chosen the style of my music video
As my music video is based on a song that my performer has written herself, I want my music video to represent this. As my performer is singing live on my video I want my music video to be all about the music, voice, lyrics and instruments. I want my video to target people who are genuinely interested in music and it's lyrics. I don't want to cover the truth of the lyrics with fancy clothes and narratives. I think this music video will target bands who are trying to make it in the music industry as they may become influenced by it, and people who play guitar as my video will focus on the instruments and people who have a passion for music and not just mainstream artist. I also want people when watching the video to listen to the lyrics and interpret them to what they want them to say, this is why I don't want them to be distracted by what they see on the screen.

Lyrical Analysis
I am going to analyse the lyrics of the track that I have chosen to do. By doing this it will help me create a more suitable video for my track as I will be able to base the narrative of my music video on my interpretation of the lyrics.
I believe the lyrics in this song are very straight forward, the song is about a couple who want to be together however one of them wants their relationship to be out in the open and the other one thinks differently. Or maybe they are having an affaire, Also if they want to be together, they should still be independent and not drain each other and still live thier own lives.

Practice
As my performer is going to sing and play live we decided that we needed to practice so that she was able to get it right, and when it came to creating my music video it looked as realistic as possible.

The song I have choosen to do
I am going to do a song that my performer has written herself the song is called Hope the Sun Shines on You.
My Performer
Last night I went to see my performer; she had reviewed and practiced the lyrics and chords I had given her. She struggled with most of them apart from the song I have a gun by Noel Gallagher, However as I want my video to look realistic and I want my performer to be comfortable so we are going to use a song that she has written herself. It’s called Hope the sun shines on you.
These are some photos of when we were practicing lastnight...

Third music video analysis
Analysis of ‘Paramore – Ignorance’ music video
The music video that I am going to analyse is 'Ignorance' by 'Paramore'. The song was released on the 17th of July 2009 from the album ‘Brand New Eyes’. The length of the song is 3:38 and the video is 3:40. The album was released on the label fueled by ramen and the song was written by Hayley Williams and Josh Farro. I have decided to analyse this music video because ...
The song was written about how the band were feeling at this time, as they were on the verge of splitting up I believe this is mirrored in the music video. The video starts with a black screen and then you see a white dirty door swing open out of nowhere. The camera then tracks through the door where you see a light been turned on and the whole band cramped up in a tiny room where the only light is from a bare light bulb hanging off of the ceiling, and the music begins to start. It then tracks in the room onto a close up of Hayley Williams’ face this lets the audience see that she looks stressed and panicked as she lays up against the wall and looks around at the other band members faces. There is then a shot of the band in the cramped room as they begin to play their instruments. The band members start to dance and jump around the small room with their instruments as Hayley still lays against the wall looking at them all. All of the band members are wearing black and the only colourful thing is Hayley’s hair. We see Hayley climbing up the walls and hitting them as the band continue to play, we are now inside the room and we can see the door has closed this could symbol to the audience that the band are now all trapped together.
As the lyrics of the song start to be sung Hayley begins to mime and grabs the light bulb towards her face so the audience can see her singing the words. She continues to stare at the other band members however they continue to ignore her and carry on with their instruments. As she is asking questions throughout the lyrics ‘Where’s your gable, your jury?’ She points the bulb towards a band members face he still does not acknowledge her. This could be telling the audience that the band may be mad with her.
Throughout the video we are seeing many close ups and extreme close ups of the instruments, such as the sticks hitting the drum and the electric guitar. Also throughout the video the scene jump cuts to the beat of the music as the song is very fast and is let by the drums the shot is changing continuously. She continues to hold the light bulb near her face and she points it to someone when the lyrics to relate to it for example when she sings ‘were not the same’ she points it Josh another band member, however they still do not take notice of her.
Even though this video is performance based there is still a running narrative, as she sings the lyrics ‘you treat me just like another stranger’ she appears to be screaming it in one of the band members ears, this could relate to the isolation she feels from the band. In the video the camera is mainly stationary with the band member moving and dancing fast around the scene giving the feeling that everything is moving very fast and that the video is full of energy, this could be the band trying to tell the audience that they are fun and active. We have many close ups on the light bulb as this acts as an important tool as with this even in the dark we can see who Hayley is talking to or about.
When the set changes to a stage, the stage is still kept very dark so you still have the feeling of the band been cramped however even though this couldn’t happen on stage the bare bulb is still hanging and even when Hayley has hold of the microphone she keeps hold of the bulb. When the video is on the stage Hayley’s outfit has changed to a black and white top, as the rest of the band are still wearing black this could symbol that she is half with them and half with someone else, or that they are still pushing her out and she no longer feels fully one of them or it could link to the ying and yang symbol and could be showing her good and bad side.
When Hayley faces the camera full on the camera zooms in quickly so they don’t lose the pace of the video, after it is fully zoomed in the shot cut to another scene that is completely different. We now see Hayley dressed in white with black Velcro on it she also has a pale face which contrasts dramatically with her hair. This could symbol that she is innocent in this argument with the band and they have no need to be ignoring her also the Velcro could mean that she is stuck in this situation we are seeing unfolding in the video. She is also surrounded by mirrors this could represent that she thinks it’s all her fault and that she can’t get away from the guilt that she feels. While she is stood in the mirrors the camera moves quickly at a range of cantered angles so the audience become confused and the shots are sped up this is not something that you would see within a film or a mainstream artist’s video. As we see the whole band on stage the camera shakes slightly to the beat of the music maybe it’s trying to represent the power of their beats in the music.
We have a high angle shot looking down on Hayley as she is pressed up against the ceiling of the room, this could be showing how she feels trapped within the band and throughout the song she is getting more angry by the situation. We also have close-ups of her hands as she is rubbing the walls she may feel that the walls are closing in on her.
When filming the band she is still pointing the bulb at them, however the shot is sometimes out of focus this could represent the confusion that the band of feeling and the lack of clarity of were their future is heading. We have shots were the bulb takes up two thirds of the screen and Hayley is singing in the background we can see her face clearly and the audience can see her frustration.
As the beat of the drums become fast the shot jump and merge in to one another, so even though the audience are not fully aware of what they are seeing all they are able to recall is the light from the bulb and Hayley’s hair. When the band are on stage the light is placed behind them so we can see all the members fully, when they are performing you cannot really tell they are arguing as they just seem to be working together as a band. Through the video when we see Hayley against the walls we see empty picture frames, paramore fans will be able to link this to their album as throughout their album there is a constant theme of picture frames and it is talked about within their songs lyrics.
As we get in to the songs instrumental we jump through all the sets we have seen so far (the cramped room, the stage and the room of mirrors) the camera is put at cantered angles and most of the shots have been sped up. We also see for the first time the band members looking at her instead of the instruments, we then see in turn each band member run round her in circles as she is holding the light bulb, this may reference the lyrics as she is singing ‘it’s nice to meet you sir’ the audience can see this as a turning point in the song as the band are going back to normal.
At the end of the song we see them in a large black room all the members of the band are running around Hayley who is looking down with her bulb under her face, they are tying her up with the wires of the bulb. One of the last shots we see is her fully tied up and not been able to move with the bulb under her chin this could symbol that the band have sorted her out, and everything will be okay now. The last shot see is Hayley stood on a block in the cramped room and she drops the bulb on the last beat of the song and then the screen goes black.
I believe that the cramped room throughout the video represents the bands relationship and as Hayley is climbing up the walls and she becomes more squashed it represents the rising and unbearable tensions between the band.![]() |

Second music video analysis
Analysis of ‘Avril Lavigne – What the hell’ music video
The music video I am going to analyse next is ‘what the hell’ by ‘Avril Lavigne’. The song was released on the 10th of January 2011 off of the album ‘Goodbye Lullaby’. The song itself is 3:39 and the music video is 3:46. ‘Goodbye Lullaby’ was released on the record label RCA. The video was produced by Max Martin and Shellback. The song was written by them also with Avril Lavigne.
The video starts with a quirky cluttered room, with a bed there are two people sleeping in the bed. It is morning and the only light from the scene is coming from the window. The camera then begins to zoom in on the bed, this tells the audience that the characters in the bed are about to wake up and the song is about to start. As the camera is zooming the words Avril Lavigne appear at the bottom of the screen, they look like they have been painted on by a brush the camera then continues to zoom, the audience can now see that one of the people in the bed is Avril. The words at the bottom of the screen then change to What the Hell so if the audience haven’t seen the video before they can tell who it’s by and what it’s called. As soon as the words disappear the song begins to start and it jump cuts directly to a large shelf that was seen at the side of the last shot, the shelf is full of shoe boxes, vinyl’s, folded up T-shirts, dinosaur toys, and a ornament of a star right at the front of the shot, the audience may link this to the fact her tour is called The black star tour. There is also a line of male trainers in front of the shelf telling the audience that the other character in the bed may be male.
It then shows us a close up of Avril for the first time; she starts to glance around the room the camera then jump cuts around the room so the audience can see what else is in the room. Within these jump cuts there is product placement for Sony with a vaio laptop and a Sony 3D TV, where you can see stars drawn with chalk on the wall once again reinforcing her tour also you can see lots of male caps lined up. When seeing the laptop on the table you can also see two skateboards, symbolizing to the audience the genre of the music.
The lyrics begin to start and we see a mid shot of Avril leaning over to the man in the bed, he wakes up as it is as if she is just waking him because of her singing. He is trying to kiss her but she won’t let him. She then begins to climb out of bed; he face is still kind of shaded as the light is coming from the window behind her. She pulls on a white shirt that has been crumpled up on the floor the shirt could symbol purity which is the opposite to what she is singing about as she says that she has kissed her boyfriends best friend, the shirt also contrasts her black underwear. She leaves the bed and there is a wide shot of her walking towards the mirror, the draws and the mirror are both vintage looking which is a contrast to the modern looking bedroom, while she is walking towards the mirror there are once again star statues. There is then an over the shoulder shot while she is looking into the mirror while she is doing her hair. We then go to a close up were the camera is still for a second and we see Avril’s hand reaching for a perfume bottle this is once again product placement for her own perfumes, this might encourage the audience who like the song and video to buy the perfume we can also see her tattoo of the black star. We then go back to the over the shoulder shot as she continues to sing to herself in the mirror and spray herself with the perfume. We then see a medium-full shot of her and the male character that has just walked up to her. She hugs him and then we see a medium close up as she is pushing him through a door. We then have a big close up as her face takes up ¼ of the screen and she begins to smile showing the audience that what she just did was not in anger. There is a slight zoom and we see Avril spraying herself with the other perfume bottle. We then see another mid shot of the other side of the door she is leaning on and we see the male character banging it, the room seems to be a closet.
We then jump to a scene of a street she is now dressed in dark clothing which is conventionally Avril Lavigne, we can tell straight away that the street is in America as there are yellow taxis. We are then looking through the taxi’s window as she begins to climb in as the driver is helping someone get something out of the boot this scene matches the lyrics as she is saying ‘all my life I’ve been good but now’ . The audience then see a mid shot of the taxi’s wheel, then loads of smoke starts to appear near it as she speeds off down the street. The audience then discover that the street is in New York as the camera shoots the side of the taxi and it says NYC Taxi. The camera then moves to above the steering wheel and we see Avril face on as she is singing, flicking her hair and checking the mirrors. She checks herself in the rear view mirror she begins to adjust it and it falls off she throws it on the seat next to her, this could be her telling the audience that she doesn’t care about the rebellious things she is doing, she is also singing the line ‘I don’t care about’ . The next shot goes back to the driver of the taxi who is mad and behind him we have the male character trying to chase the car on his bike. She is then seen hanging out of the cars window still singing the song showing the viewers that she is carefree. We then have a wide shot of the street with the car skidding round the corner and the man on the bike following, We then see the bike pulling up alongside the taxi, he mouths something to her through the open window however she blows him a kiss and speeds off as she sings the line ‘what the hell’. We see her coming around another street corner she begins to open the door and climb out even though the car is still in motion, the camera then tracks the nose of the taxi as it crashes into another car.
The camera jump to her walking alongside a brick wall that has been painted red, she once again stands out as she is wearing black. We then see her walking through a gate were loads of men begin to look at her as one of them is holding a basketball the audience are to assume they are in a basketball court. The camera cuts to a long shot and we see the basketball net and a few more guys playing the audience can still tell it’s in the city as it is a built up area and the walls have graphitti on. She then begins to walk through the guys smiling at them, she then feels one of the guy’s muscles, he has a black shirt on with a silver start reminding the audience of the theme of her tour. She then gets the basketball where the camera cuts to a low angle shot of the basket ball net where she scores, she then starts to hive-five all the guys while the singing the line ‘I just need some time to play’. The next shot is the male character riding up to the gate on his bike she then looks shocked and mouths ‘that’s my boyfriend’ telling the audience who the character actually is, as she has said this all the men gather round him and try to stop him catching up with her.
The next scene we see her walking through the door with all vinyl’s stuck to it, this could remind the audience of the house earlier. The camera is then tracking her down the shop as the shop keeper turns to smile at her. The camera then cuts to a sign next to a mannequin flashing saying vintage clothing this confirms to the audience were she is. She then goes around the shop and goes to a glasses stand and picks up a pair, the glasses she put on are in fact her actual glasses that have been seen in other videos of hers. We can see the door in the background and her boyfriend walks in. She is miming to herself she see him, pulls a funny face and then runs away down the shop. She continues walking around the shop and picks up random clothing of the rails as she is walking towards the changes room she stops to look at a separate area of clothes; once again we have more product placement this time for her own clothing range abbey dawn she then throws the other clothes in the boyfriends hands and looks throughout the clothing range. After getting changed she leaves the shop and she is wearing a top that says ‘what the hell’ this is available to buy so if the viewers like the song and clothes they have a chance to buy them. She then appears in a dark corridor her boyfriend is stopped in the shop to pay for her clothes and he follows her. As the music begins to become upbeat again she jumps out of the corridor and onto a stage with a band who are also wearing clothes from the male range of abbey dawn and there is also a crowd of fans, the viewers then get to see her perform and get to see close ups of the instruments. Avril is dancing around showing the audience the energy of the song and also the crowd are having a good time this may influence the audience to go t one of her gigs. We then see more product placement for Sony, as we have a close up of the Sony Ericson Xperia mobile phone which one fan is filming the gig on. She then jumps onto the crowd and crowd surfs to the back of them were they put her down and she sees her boyfriend, she then smiles drags him and then the next shot we have cut to an aerial shot of them falling on the bad that we have seen at the start of the video as the song is ending. They are both looking up at the camera he falls asleep as she sings the last of the lyrics, she then winks at the camera. This could be telling the audience that she has had her day of fun and not caring as referenced in the lyrics however that day is over as she is going to bed with her boyfriend and they will wake up to a different day. ![]() |

Cast List
Here is the cast list for my music video ...
- Kim Walker - This is going to be the dancer in my music video, I have chosen her because she used to study dance and was once a trained dance teacher this is why I felt that she would be the best for the position and as I have no dancing experience and would be unable to choreograph the scene, I could rely for her to create it and for me to extra input after.
- 'Bee' - This is going to be the performer in my music video, this is because the song that my music video is based on was written by her and performed by her.
